A lot of jobs require employees to sit at a computer for long periods of time, sometimes all day long. This can be hard on our backs, as well as our eyes. Keeping this in mind, taking the proper eye care measures at work is essential to preventing eyestrain.

While sitting at your desk, proper lighting is essential. Too much light may hurt your eyes. Any overhead lighting should not be brighter than your screen. Also, set the brightness of your screen to a level that is comfortable on your eyes.

The distance you sit from your screen is also very important. Too close, or too far can have adverse affects. If your eyes are too far away, this not only affects your posture, but forces you to move your eyes closer to the screen which can cause a focus strain. If you are forced to lean forward from the distance you’re sitting in order see the screen clearly, it might be time for a new prescription. Also, old monitors with low resolution are harder on the eyes, so consider upgrading to a higher resolution screen to avoid eye fatigue.

In general, staring at a screen for long periods of time can cause eyestrain. If your job requires you to sit in front of a screen for long periods of time, taking eye breaks are just as important as stretching. To stretch your eyes, use the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, stare at objects at least twenty feet away for twenty seconds.

Keeping these at-your-desk eye care measures in mind while working can help prevent eyestrain and keep your eyes healthier. If you have any questions regarding proper eye care while at work, call us at 877-871-1684 for more information.
