As a new year begins we often take the opportunity to start fresh. We use the new beginning as a motivator to kick bad habits, try new things, or perhaps be more productive individuals.  Whatever the case may be, this year try and make a New Year “Eye Care” Resolution. Here are some ideas to help you get started.

Eye Exams – Start the year off with an eye exam. Visit your doctor and take the necessary steps to monitor your eye health from here on out. If you are a new eyewear user, or need a new prescription, try buying some frames that will give you a new look.

Eat Healthier – A lot of the foods that are already good for you, are also great for eye care. Eating more leafy greens, colorful fruits and vegetables, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins can help prevent eye disease.

Quit Smoking – Smoking is harmful to just about every organ in your body, even your eyes. According to the New York Department of Heath, people who smoke are 4 times more likely to go blind as they get older. Heavy smokers are 3 times more likely to get cataracts and there is a strong link between smoking and diabetes which can lead to diabetic retinopathy.

Wear Sunglasses – Remind yourself to wear sunglasses whenever you are outside. Protecting your eyes from the sun and UV exposure can reduce the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.

The 20-20-20 Rule – This is a very important, “good habit” that one should try and incorporate into their daily routine, especially those that sit in front of a screen all day. Every 20 minutes, take a 20 second break to rest your eyes and reduce eyestrain. Focus on objects at least 20 feet away from you.

Drink Water – Drinking water helps keep you hydrated. Staying hydrated produces tears that keep your eyes moist. The combination of water, oils and special proteins found in tears, lubricates your eyes and helps prevent dryness and irritation.
